TOWN EVAC ORDER RECINDED AND NO FIRE GROWTH
Today's Elk Fire update:
Communities experiencing large-scale, long-term fire incidents can easily become fatigued from having fire in their back yards. Changes in fire behavior on a daily or weekly basis can feel like whiplash; area closures prevent access to beloved public lands; and economic impacts can be catastrophic. Firefighters are doing everything they can to establish containment as quickly as possible so that life can return to normalcy. Rocky Mountain Team 2 sincerely appreciates the continued patience and gracious hospitality of local residents. Unfortunately, it will likely be some time yet before the Elk Fire is declared “out”.
Current Situation: The dozer line along the fire perimeter in Division G was completed yesterday, with special thanks to Hinsdale County for the use of their dozer to help get this fireline established. A hand crew is continuing the line north into terrain not suitable for mechanical equipment, to tie it in with a rock slope devoid of vegetation. Another hand crew followed behind the dozer, improving the line and mopping up hot spots. Fireline adjacent to several hunting cabins remains secure, while a hand crew is working on constructing fireline west from the cabins along the fire’s uncontained northern perimeter.
The Elk Fire is not a complete burn, with patches of blackened stems interspersed with green trees where fire has burned through surface fuels beneath the canopy. Large diameter logs are smoldering and holding heat that can be reignited during windy, hot, or dry conditions. Interior smoke will periodically be visible over the coming months as pockets of heat continue to burn within the fire perimeter, consuming available fuels. During particularly hot, dry, and windy periods, unburned fuels within the perimeter may ignite, producing smoke and visible flames.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Yesterday delivered several rounds of light sprinkles to the Elk Fire area, keeping fire behavior minimal. Similar conditions are expected today, with a high-pressure system moving in from the southwest, ushering a drier airmass into the region. Temperatures will be warmer, with highs in the low 80s and relative humidity will be in the low 20% range. Cloudy conditions overnight will move out to the east, followed by inflow of monsoonal moisture again on Monday.
